Buying guide: charging cables

Start with the connector on your phone

iPhone 15 and newer, almost every current Samsung Galaxy, Google Pixel and most Android phones use USB-C. iPhone 5 through iPhone 14 use Lightning. Older budget Android phones, Bluetooth speakers and some game controllers still use Micro USB. If you have a mix of devices at home, a 3-in-1 cable saves carrying three.

Then check the other end

USB-A is the older rectangular plug found on most car sockets and older chargers. USB-C to USB-C or USB-C to Lightning cables need a USB-C charger, and they are the ones that unlock proper fast charging.

Wattage and length

A 20W–27W cable covers fast charging for any iPhone. Samsung Super Fast Charging needs a 25W or higher USB-C cable, and laptops need 60W or 100W. Longer cables are convenient but lose a little speed, so keep 2–3m cables for the bedside and sofa and a 1m or shorter cable for power banks.

Charging Cables questions

Will a 100W cable damage my phone?

No. The phone and charger agree on the power level between themselves. A 100W cable simply means the cable can carry up to 100W safely; your phone will only draw what it supports.

Which cable do I need for iPhone 15 or 16?

A USB-C to USB-C cable. Pair it with a 20W or higher USB-C charger for fast charging.
